Danish pigs

Danish pigs - the best quality

Danish pigs are unique in their kind and recognized for their high quality. Denmark is a leader in pig production thanks to a professional approach and focus on animal welfare. We are proud to offer Danish pigs, which we believe are the best on the market. We always have Danish pigs for sale.

Our suppliers are subject to the Animal Welfare Act's rules on animal welfare, thus we are guaranteed good deliveries. Here you can read about why Danish pigs are so good and what standards apply in Danish pig production.

Genetics and breeds of Danish pigs

The quality is ensured by the fact that all animals we communicate are of Danish genetics, as well as free of trichinae and halothene gene, the so-called "stress gene". Thanks to the optimal crosses, Danish farmers are able to supply the best piglets for fattening and the most meat-rich slaughter animals. Crosses of Landrace, Yorkshire and Duroc are distinctive to the Danish breeding system.

Landrace and Yorkshire are female breeds and are known for high fertility. The landrace has a good slaughter quality with a high meat content, where Yorkshire scores top marks in production efficiency, high meat percentage, growth and low feed consumption, which provides optimal yield at slaughter.

Compared with the other countries in Europe, Denmark has the largest population of Duroc breed, which is used as a boar breed at crossings with LY lakes. Duroc originates from North America and came to Denmark in 1977. Since then, genetics has been improved by Dan Avl, and now meat content and growth have been increased.

Danish pig producers work primarily with 2 cross forms. One is LY / YL females with Duroc boars, which ensures full cross-breeding and thus a good meat quality and production efficiency. The second cross is a zigzag cross, where you alternately make your own sows of either L or Y. At each cross, a heterosis effect occurs, which means an improvement in the characteristics of the animals in relation to the characteristics of the parent breeds.

You can read more about genetics and breeding animals on the following pages: DanAvl and Breeders of Denmark.

Food safety contributes to quality

Farmers are the first supply link in the chain "from farm to fork", and the better the basis, the higher the quality further down the chain. Danish pork has been declared free of hormones, heavy metals and pesticides since 1985. Compared to other European countries, the incidence of Salmonella is low; 1.2% in 2012. The table shows the presence of residues in pork compared to other European countries.

Denmark Germany Holland Belgium Poland
Growth hormones 0 7 0 0 1
Tungemetal 0 39 1 0 7
Prohibited substances 0 1 3 1 0
Antibiotics 5 327 6 4 11

Health status

In the table you can see the most common diseases / microorganisms in Danish pig herds. The herd may have no, one or more diseases / microorganisms, all this will appear from our information.

You can also check CHR no. in the SPF-SuS register if the farmer is enrolled in the scheme.

TYPE SPF status Possible microorganisms VACCINES (most commonly used)
Piglets BLUE MYC / AP 2 AP 6 AP 12 PRRS = DK, VAC /NYS Cirko / Hypobac, Ap2 / Myc / Prrs / Influenza Porcilis / PCV 2,
Reproduction animals RED Same as piglets Same as piglets

Miscellaneous status information SPF-SuS / UNKNOWN

In case of non-registration to the SPF-SuS register, the crew status will appear as "Unknown". "Unknown" means that SPF-SuS has not received health information on the herd, which is due to the farmer's lack of participation in this voluntary scheme. The word "Unknown" itself means Unknown, ie. not stated and nothing else. There are e.g. many pure BLUE herds that are not included in the SPF-SuS register, where the term "Unknown" will appear. The fact that the herd is "Unknown" in status does not mean that the pigs are conventional. Conventional pigs in Denmark are from herds that carry Ap2 or NYS disease, the rest of the status is not crucial, because as long as pigs carry Ap2, they are conventional.
